Germany - Dresden to Berlin

The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 at the height of the Cold War, the ongoing political rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union and each of their respective allies. Access to the Brandenburg Gate, located in East Berlin, was cut off. The Gate became a symbol of East and West German division but since the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, it is now a national symbol of peace and unity.
